Multiple Teams · Vote for the KSJC January Athlete of the Month!

Each coach was asked to nominate one Athlete for the KSJC Athlete of the Month for January.  Please read the descriptions below and vote!  The poll will close on Saturday.

Cheer: Itzel Hammer“Never missing a practice nor game, Itzel exudes what it means to be a strong leader; she does this naturally and with ease. From the moment Itzel has been on the team, I have seen her take on the role of gathering the girls together, giving pep talks before and after the game, as well as pushing herself to learn cheers immediately so that she can teach the rest of the team. She is a perfect example of what it means to be a student athlete- focusing on her academics and bringing that same positive energy and school pride both on and off the court. I am extremely proud of her growth.” -Coach Tactac

B. Soccer: Jesus Vasquez – “Jesus has been on fire during the month of January.  In just 4 games in January, Jesus has tallied 6 goals and 1 assist, including a hat trick vs. Alma Heights and a very important 2 goal outing in an away game vs. rival DCP.  In addition to his performance on the field of competition, he has demonstrated a great deal of leadership during practices, team meetings, and one-on-one conversations with the younger players around the importance of grades and in class behavior.  His efforts even landed him in the Mercury News in the “Highlight Reel” series.  Quite simply, he has had one of the best months that a player can have on the field.” – Coach McCormack

G. Basketball: Sierra Estifanos“Sierra has stepped up big this season averaging up to 3 blocks per game.  As a sophomore, she has already taken leadership amongst her team leading the young Wolfpack to a winning record during league.  She is a force to be reckoned inside and her mere presence causes opponents to alter and second think their shots.  She plays virtually every minute of the game and does not just show this excellence on the court.  Sierra is a model student and boasts a 4.0 GPA.  She is a dedicated young woman and will continue to set the example of what it means to be a student athlete.” – Coach Dela Rosa

G. Soccer: Jennifer Ortega – “This is Jennifer’s third year with the Girls Varsity Soccer team and she has become one of our strongest players on and off the field. On the field, Jennifer has an unrelenting drive to fight for every ball that is sent in her direction. She not only outruns most of her opponents, but, when she does, she does so with power and finesse.  Off the field, Jennifer has become a leader amongst our team. She doesn’t hesitate to carry our game and practice equipment out to the field even when it isn’t her turn to help. Jennifer has also made everyone on the team feel welcomed by offering motivating words during tough games or by leading a sing-a-long on our bus rides to and from games. Vote for Jennifer Ortega as January Athlete of the Month for her exceptional display of zest, grit, optimism, and social intelligence on and off the field.” -Coach Arámbula

B. Basketball: Carlos Osorio“Carlos is the epitome of what a student athlete should be. Not only is he one of the best players on Varsity Basketball, but he is one of the best students in the classroom. Carlos has above a 3.7 GPA in the classroom. The most impressive thing about Carlos is that he is a two-sport athlete. He plays Soccer in an outside developmental league all while playing Basketball for KSJC. Carlos ability to balance both sports all while keeping his grades as high as they are is nothing short of extraordinary. Carlos only started playing basketball 2 years ago. In all my years of coaching, I have never seen an athlete new to a sport become as good as he already is. Not only is he one of my best players, but he is the best leader on the team. The sky is the limit for Mr. Osorio. It has been a pleasure coaching him for the last two years and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for him.” – Sunny Singh
